I always drew as a child and wanted to be a “real” artist from an early age. Although I did not have any formal art training, my passion finally led me to apprentice myself, in the late 1970’s to a small design studio in Johannesburg. I worked there without pay for about 18 months until I had learnt enough to move on and up the scale.
After many years of different agencies and studios I ended up as a medical illustrator at Groote Schuur Hospital and University of Cape Town. This I did for 15 years until the department closed down and I was retrenched in 2002. At last I was able to realize my dream of being “real” artist and started freelancing.
Depending on what the work requires I can work digitally, using Illustrator, Corel Draw and Photoshop, or I work traditionally using drawing materials, inks, water colour, oils, airbrush. I am constantly astounded by the quality of work being done in the field of children’s book illustration and am enthralled and excited by this new world that I’ve been drawn into.
